Born Pretty homerun! Edited, read to the end.

Born Pretty homerun!

I have to admit I was a bit nervous about ordering nail polish that I’d never heard of or seen reviews. But these beautiful shades had me intrigued and judging by the gorgeous green I swatched the other day, I felt this would be a winner too. I wasn’t wrong! I can’t be certain but I think the name of this brand is BK? It’s all in Chinese so I can’t say for sure. No color name, just 24. But its gorgeous! Not what I’d consider a full size bottle as you can see here.

#24 of the BK line from the Born Pretty Store.

The color and texture reminds me a lot of Zoya Pixie Dust in Arabella. No, not a total dupe, but close enough. It doesn’t have that micro silver glitter in it but it shines on its own just fine. The formula is perfection and dries fast. Girls, this is ONE coat! Now I want to order more! Ya like? You can order yours and so many more pretty things at http://www.bornprettystore.com and use my 10% off discount code LDX31.

UPDATE!
If you are considering doing blog reviews for this company, I want you to be aware of something. Communication with them has become increasingly spotty. They ask for product choices that you’d like to test and review. They send you items at their cost for this purpose. It started out fine from my first order. Fast forward to today, May 17, 2014, I have been volleying back and forth for 2 months. I sent them, at their request, items I’d like to review next. A full week later I get an email an item is out of stock. This is from their NEW ITEMS listing. So I go through the site, choose again, email. Wait two weeks for response. Etc, etc. Without giving you every ridiculous detail, either someone is “posing” as Alice, my previous contact, or she’s not making it into the office very often. I got an email this morning to give her a detailed choice of the last item replacement. I did. I never had this trouble ordering for myself with my own money or points. So, for you bloggers out there who are considering reviewing products for their blogger program, get ready for frustration. I want to be perfectly honest about this because I know that a lot of my readers are bloggers themselves. It’s not always easy dealing with a company in a foreign company. There are language and translation barriers. Culture differences at times and communication is most always somewhat delayed. But this is over the top. I’ve always been kind and understanding with BP store, but I think it’s time to convey the fact that this is bugging the tar out of me. I even chose a nail polish from their site for review, as the three polishes I bought before were nice. She emailed me two weeks later, they can’t send polish overseas. SAY WHAT?! Bogus. So there. This is off my chest and we will see where it goes from here. Have any of you had these issues with your contact? Let me know.

Born Pretty store haul!

Born Pretty store haul!

First I want to say thank you to a sweet lady, Sophie, aka MoonBeautyBar on YouTube, for my shopping spree at the born Pretty Store at http://www.bornprettystore.com.

This Singapore-based shop has a lot of really cool polishes, cosmetics, nail art accessories, jewelry and more. Just to get my feet wet, I picked out a few pretty polishes, some nail gems, and a few pieces of costume jewelry to use when I photograph for my blog.

I will be reviewing the polishes soon but just looking through the bottle, they are super pretty! The one on the right is actually a textured polish.

I probably wouldn’t wear the rings out much as they are really inexpensive and I’m thinking without a good layer of clear nail polish on those puppies, Id see some color turning. But I love the stretchy mock diamond bands. They fit on any finger! Thank you so much Sophie!

UPDATED NOTATION: I will have to say it took a full month to arrive after ordering, but I think it’s because the store was closed for week in celebration of a local holiday. Communication with the company is exceptional. But you will have to pull out your patience cap if you’re ordering from the USA. I have found they do not get in any hurry to ship your order and the “ships in 24 hours” promise is just a metaphor. :-/

Update if you’re a blogger who is wanting to review for Born Pretty, my experience. This has no bearing on their products. Just my frustration with the program:

Stamping kit for beginners like me

Stamping kit for beginners like me

And I must emphasize, I am a BEGINNER when it comes to nail stamping! You can find tons of stamping tools and design plates for your nail art at the Born Pretty Store http://www.bornprettystore.com/professional-nail-stamping-kit5pcs-exquisite-nail-stamp-p-9338.html for every level of expertise. Let me remind you that it is very important to use a highly pigmented (non-sheer) nail lacquer for the stamping process. Now I have hundreds of polishes and have never purposely chosen one with stamping in mind. So choosing a polish to test this sucker out wa a challenge. I finally settled on a recommended brand/style using a Sally Hansen Insta Dri and it worked great! I found a couple other polishes I thought were pigmented enough, no go! So now I’m on the hunt for some good stamping polishes and I think the Insta Dri is going to be my GoTo polish for this art. I started with a simple design from the five plates included in my kit. I added the coconuts just for fun! I did have trouble stamping but I’m pretty sure I need more appropriate polish for the task. I’m just showing you the best nail!

Pictured above is the stamping kit I got from the Born Pretty Store. It retails for $8.37, free shipping worldwide, no minimum order and your order ships from Singapore. It takes about three weeks to arrive in the US. This kit came with a two ended (large and small rubber ends) stamper, a scraper, 5 design plates and a plate holder. No instructions are included but all you have to do is a search on YouTube and find several instructional tutorials. Now, excuse me while I shop my polish stash for some good stamping lacquers!

Born Pretty Water Decals…sooo easy!

Born Pretty Water Decals...sooo easy!

I have to say these decals took me by surprise! I’ve used plenty of nail stickers before but this is my first experience using water transfer decals. The first one you see here was placed over a delicate blush pink. I decided to have extra fun with it by adding a few pink dots. After applying a base coat and letting dry, just cut out the decal, soak in tepid water for about 15-20 seconds, slide off with tweezers, pat dry and place on your nail. I followed up with a thin coat of Seche Vite, but you could use any quick dry top coat.

Here's the pretty rose pattern decals on white!

The pretty pink rose pattern can be found here: http://www.bornprettystore.com/1sheet-vintage-arabesque-blue-flower-patterned-nail-water-decals-transfers-sticker-y080y101-p-12691.html

I opted to use a lovely orchid shade as my base coat for the decal shown above. Although it’s pretty, I think a paler shade would show off how lovely these decals really are. This one was a bit trickier for me to work with. I think because they were slightly larger and I have smallish nail beds. But a little trimming and coaxing makes it doable. I also added a bit of dotting to this set and finished with a top coat.

Here I placed the floral decals over a white base. Just lovely!

The decals are more flexible with this one, so if you let the excess overlap, just press down and file off the free edge of your nail. Easy!

Pretty Polish Tag!

Pretty Polish Tag!

First I want to thank Hannah, one of my fave YouTubers on Evebelievebeauty! She did a great job with her Pretty Polish tag so I thought I’d share my answers. These are always so much fun to watch but since I don’t do videos, I’ll have to bore you with plain ole verbiage. Try not to fall asleep! 😉

PRETTY POLISH TAG
1. When it comes to colors, are you conservative or hot mama?
I’m all over the map on this one. I may get a wild hare and bling it up with a total glitter bomb. Then the next day mute it down with a baby blue hue. Ya just never know.
2. Are you a drug store junkie or high end diva?
I am pretty much a bargain hunter. I love me some Pure Ice or Sinful Colors. Then I love nearly everything by Sally Hansen and I’m slowly working on my tiny Indie stash. L’oreal is amazing and Revlon has some pretty awesome scented polishes in their Parfumerie line. The higher end of my personal spectrum ends up with BOGOs and such with Zoya, China Glaze and OPI in my basket. I do have two Butter London minis but always looking for a sale. Sure I’ll take a Deborah Lippmann…girlfriend you want to send me one for review?! Seriously, it’s just not in my budget right now.
3. What’s your All time favorite polish to date?
If you’re talking brand, I have to throw my vote to Zoya with OPI, Sally Hansen and L’oreal running alongside.
4. What’s the most you’ve ever paid for a polish? Least?
The most I’ve ever paid, at full price, is $9-$10. That’s a rare event since I wait for sales. The least was 25 cents for a bargain bin bottle at a store closing event. But the coolest find was a 50 cent bottle of a Color Club duochrome. After seeing in on eBay for as high as $12, I’d have asked you to slap me on the noggin if I didn’t take that one home.
5. Would you consider yourself a pro painter or just an amateur?
Total amateur, rookie, noob, loser! Lol just kidding on that loser part. I’m a beginner when it comes to nail art but I do try.
6. What’s your biggest polish pet peeve?
I deplore slow drying polish. I don’t care if it smells like a chemical plant, I don’t care if it stains my nails. All fixable. But I hate spending time painting and prepping, all to have a nic or smudge even an hour later. I’m a big believer in fast dry topcoats. You bet your buttons.
7. What’s more important…top coat or base coat?
Hmmm, I forgo these both from time to time but I tend to base coat more for creating a good smooth surface. I’m loving the fact you don’t need either for textured polishes. When I’m applying heavy duty glitter, it’s Elmer’s Glue under all that shine. It’s much easier to peel it away than sit for an hour soaking in acetone.
8. Nail art- love it or leave it?
Love it. I suck at it, but I love it. I’m learning!
9. If you could design a polish, what would you name it and what would it look like?
I’m assuming this means a polish line. I love sea shells, well anything to do with the sea, the beach, etc. I love lacquer. So maybe ShellLacque. Please don’t anyone steal this in case I win the lottery and buy a warehouse, then start a company. Just kidding…not going to happen. 😉 Anyway, I love love love three particular trends right now. Textures or sandy ones in particular. I love multichromes and I am scary crazy over linear holos. My textures would have the consistency of Zoya’s Pixie Dusts but the colors would be shades of ocean blues, aquamarine, emerald, sea foam, white sand and some would have tiny holo stars and shell shape matte glitters. Oh, and one to resemble the soft blush of pink sand like they have on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera. It’s a soft pink with tiny speckles of coral. How’s that for big dreams?
10. Share your best tip for the perfect manicure.
I think any manicure needs to have a smooth and healthy foundation. If it’s ridge city, you better be sporting a texture on that nail. Buff those beds girls. I promise it will make them grow!
