Neptune’s Bubbles mani inspired by Cult Cosmetics lacquers!

I was thinking about the cool clear ocean this morning, naturally while I was looking for some nail art inspo. I pulled out a few faves from my Cult Cosmetics collection and BOOM! A bubble mani featuring some cool blues. One of the quickest ways to take your mani from “meh” to “Oh My! is with nail dotting tools. Say hello to my undersea mani I call, Neptune’s Bubbles! Not that Neptune has anything to do with our ocean. But the blues, it’s all about blue! Did you know?…”Neptune’s atmosphere is made up of hydrogen, helium and methane. The methane in Neptune’s upper atmosphere absorbs the red light from the sun but reflects the blue light from the Sun back into space. This is why Neptune appears blue.” It’s a gassy planet, but hey, it’s blue!

I'm pretty stoked about how my seaside mani turned out. I called it, "Neptune's Bubbles"! Over each nail I used the iridescent flaky topper called Hollywood Forever. Pinky nail is dark and shimmery House of Blues, middle finger is a creme, Catalina and pointer finger I used The Roxy. The accent nail (my inspo for Neptune's Bubbles) I used all four with a dotting tool.

Here are the polishes used in today’s mani.

House of Blues, sorry, no link to this beauty. I couldn’t find it on the web site so it may be discontinued. If you do find it let me know! It’s a gorgeous cobalt blue shimmer, and a one coater. Just like the two cremes here, each only require one coat and super glossy.

Catalina, described as, “Catalina is like a vacation to your favorite island. On a warm day, feel free to wear this bright and dreamy blue – and nothing else!”

The Roxy, described as, “The Roxy is the new language of LA sass! This vibrant, feminine hue can take your mani from gentle to intense, depending on your mood. Name inspired on the renamed venue in Sunset blvd . Name inspired by the legendary nightclub on the Sunset strip. Bob Marley & the Wailers, The Ramones, RHCP and Gwen Stefani are some of the amazing musicians who played at The Roxy.”

Hollywood Forever, described as, “Hollywood Forever is a light-shattering polish for next-dimension nails. Its opalescent glow and shining shades go on like magic over any base color.”

Gee, now I’m thinking of some other color combos for this cute look. How about you, have you tried a bubble dotted mani? By the way, these are available now for $12.50 ea, and Cult Cosmetics also carry polish kits, nail art tools and more!

Cult Cosmetics, two new shades made for each other

I love the formulas of Cult Cosmetics polishes anyway, and here are two more that didn’t disappoint. I finally got to try out Huntington Beach and it’s amazing. Now, I just noticed on Facebook that the real Huntington Beach, CA, just had a freak storm laying down about 1/2″ of hail making it look like it snowed there! Wow, that global warming is a diva! LOL But seriously, in honor of that great beach, here is a super simple mani using Huntington Beach polish and accented with a dry brushing and trident of Whisky A Go Go!

It's like Huntington Beach and Whisky A Go Go were made for each other!

On Top: "A rich marsala red. Our 'Color of the Year'! Huntington Beach polish pairs perfectly with long nights, warm fires, and red wine. A sensual red to inspire your most romantic mani ever." On Bottom: "A bold, full glitter coat. Whisky a Go Go is for all you bright, bold, beautiful sparklers. This thick, gold glitter will make you feel like royalty as you party like a princess."

I should mention, Whisky A Go Go is a one coater glitter. And Huntington Beach is opaque in two coats. Buttery formula as well!

This mani is Shamrockin’ using shades from Cult Cosmetics!

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and what better way to celebrate than with a bit ‘o the Irish feel than with a Shamrockin’ mani?! Now, I have to admit, I don’t have a drop of Irish in me. Not that I know of. But most of us have grown up celebrating the day anyway. I did some simple nail art using a dotting tool for some rudimentary shamrocks. I used a fine lining brush for the rainbow and added a few dots of gold to complete the look. No blarney, I did it in 15 minutes! Let’s take a look.

The mani at the end of the rainbow! Here is a cute nail art idea for you for your St. Patrick's Day mani. I used 2 coats of that pale minty green Venice Beach, 2 coats of Palos Verde and the gold accents I used the gold micro glitter bomb polish (not a glitter topper, a polish, called Whiskey A Go Go by Cult Cosmetics.

You can used your own imagination for your rainbow and pot ‘o gold! I used all Cult shades for this one. How about you? Do you celebrate, drink green beer or go to the parades? If not, at least you could sit in comfort on March 17th and create a fun look in no time! You can order all these shades and a ton more at Cult Cosmetics today! Links below so you can go shop now, and it won’t take a whole bag of gold either!

Holy Holo Smackdown! My collection comparison

I have begun to notice that I have a pretty decent collection of holographic topcoats and polishes. Not tons, but a truckload! Reflecting on the brand families on my shelves, I have noticed I have quite a leaning towards the silver holo family. Recently I bought a lovely little number called Masked Affair from the Dark Sides of Grey collection by L’Oreal. I posted swatches yesterday on my Instagram feed. I pulled out all my holos (mainly linear) in the silver family and figured you might be interested in a comparison of the brands I personally own…or not 😉 But just for fun here they are. I might mention, I have linears in greens, gold, lavenders, purples and pinks. At some point I might do a smackdown of those too. First, here are the bottles shot in artificial light. It was cloudy, what can I say?! Then when I was almost done the sun came out but I did a comparison and they all looked the same in both types of light. I did not use my camera’s flash because honestly although it makes for a stunning effect on the nail, it doesn’t always represent a true to life image of what you and others see. We don’t go about using flashes of light to view someone’s polish. And…it makes my skin look like crap! LOL

On the left is Mega by ILNP and on the right, Holo by Mentality.

I went ahead and included ONLY the bottle shot of Shine on Crazy Diamond by Orly. It did not qualify in my book as a buildable holo (although it's a gorgeous top coat, it's too sparse to even attempt a full on layering). Middle is Masked Affair by L'Oreal and on the right is the only NON-linear holo but a gorgeous scattered holo called Holographic Pearls by Revlon.

Here are images I took of each polish (except for the Orly topcoat). The description and grading system is in the caption of each image.

Mega by ILNP. In my honest opinion of the six holos I tested, this had the strongest linear rainbow effect. Opacity level 2 coats. Easy application scale 1-5, 5 being best, a 5. Shine surface medium not full glossy. Regular light, not sun or lamp holo effect 1-5, a 2, slight holo. Dries fast.

Holo by Mentality. In my honest opinion of the six holos I tested, this had a nice linear rainbow effect. I'd give it a 4 but it's stronger over a color. Opacity level 3 coats. Easy application scale 1-5, 5 being best, a 5. Shine surface full glossy. Regular light, not sun or lamp holo effect 1-5, a 2, slight holo. Dries fast. All of these by the way are easy to remove.

Silver by Nabi. It was my first ever linear holo so it holds a special place in my heart. I have 7 of her sisters! Some of the other shades by Nabi actually have a stronger linear effect. Opacity level 3 coats. Easy application scale 1-5, 5 being best, a 3. This was the only one that wanted to "pull" so a slow flat steady hand is required. Shine surface medium not full glossy. Regular light, not sun or lamp holo effect 1-5, a 2, slight holo. Dries fast.

Coachella by Cult Cosmetics. I like the linear effect of this one for a more subtle effect but it really shines over other shades so I'd give it a 4 out of 5. Opacity level 3 coats. Easy application scale 1-5, 5 being best, a 5. Shine surface full glossy. Regular light, not sun or lamp holo effect 1-5, a 2, slight holo. Dries medium.

Masked Affair by L'Oreal. This stunner has a very strong linear rainbow effect, nearly as perfect as Mega by ILNP. It has a tad rosier base than Mega's silveriness. Opacity level 2 coats. Easy application scale 1-5, 5 being best, a 5. Shine surface medium not full glossy. Regular light, not sun or lamp holo effect 1-5, a 2, slight holo. Dries fast. This beauty is new on the shelves and still a bit hard to find. It's from the Dark Sides of Grey collection.

Holographic Pearls by Revlon from the Transforming Effects Top Coats collection is NOT linear. But, it's none the less amazing and I decided to include it with the others. It is fully opaque in 4 thin easy to apply coats. Dries fairly smooth and shines like the underbelly of a jewel-hoarding dragon! It's easy to remove and fast drying. Whether you're sitting in a dim livingroom or in full on sunshine, you will attract attention. If you can't find the others, get this! It's a scattered holo wonder.

I’d love to hear what you think about the holographic explosion. I love them, but I’m not always in love with the application. I’ve been pretty fortunate to find polishes that weren’t that challenging. Believe me, if I was bothered by a couple of them, I wouldn’t have purchased their sister colors. Have you tried any of these and what was your experience? I don’t often do comparison’s…because I’m a bit lazy and I’ll leave that to the more ambitious bloggers! 😉 I’d love to hear from you! In retrospect, to be a great holo, linear or otherwise, does not have to have an “in-yo-face” linear effect. It can be glossy (however it seems some glossy finishes can degrade the effect, some of them do). I like the ones that shout, “I’m here I’m here I’m here!” And I like the more timid ones that say, “Yeah, I’m shiny, so?” I just love the lil twinklers! Oh, and the prop under the finger! I almost forgot this but it’s an amazing nail balm by Sweet Baby. Link is below.

A chilly mani for January with Cult Cosmetics lacquers

The weatherman tells us we will be in single digits tomorrow here in chilly Southwest Missouri. Or as I call it in the wintertime, “Misery”! So in honor of the frosty forecast. Here is a quick and easy design using some amazing lacquers by Cult Cosmetics!

It's freezing outside but I thought it would be fun to paint a frosty mani. I used the teal metallic polish from Cult called PCH, and perfect 1-coat application. I topped it off with a thin coat each of Hollywood Bowl and Hollywood Forever, shown in my hand.

I may be dreaming of spring, but I do love a nice wintery manicure. So fresh and welcoming when you’re sitting by the fire. What sort of manis do you like to see when the weather outside is frightful?
